Shakuntala Devi | Review

The world named her as the “Human Computer”. She’s a mother, a wife and also a Mathematician. She is none other than SHAKUNTALA DEVI. The biographical drama film features the journey of her life of becoming a great Mathematician. The film is written and directed by Anu Menon and the characters are played by Vidya Balan as ‘Shakuntala Devi’, Sanya Malhotra, Jissu Sengupta, Amit Sadh, Prakash Belawadi.

The movie was released on Amazon Prime Video on 31st july 2020 and created a buzz in the social media sites. This movie is all about a girl with no schooling, no mentor, no training, but has a brain that loves figuring out numbers and how they play. A girl, who grew up becoming a Mathematical genius with sparkling eyes and bright Sarees. Shakuntala Devi tells the story of a fierce, feminist, independent successful woman, who in 1977 calculated the 23rd root of a 201 digit number in 50 seconds.

This story is about affection, expectation, disappointment between mothers and daughters which has been going on for Generations and a cycle of how daughters become mothers themselves and finally understand the dilemma and love of mothers. The film keeps toggling between Shakuntala Devi’s past and present, the personal and the professional. It treats us to the thrilling, impressive genius of Shakuntala Devi, but pretty soon we begin to view her through the eyes of her daughter.

Shakuntala Devi gave everyone the idea of solving math problems easily by the help of ‘Vedic Maths’ which was used by many astrologers in the early era.

Paritosh Banerjee played by Jissu Sengupta is a confident IAS officer and doesn’t want her to change.

Anupama Banerjee played by Sanya Malhotra gave her performance as a frustrated daughter who is tired of her mother’s lies and boasting of her skills.

Abhay Kumar played by Amit Sadh, Anupama’s husband who loves her dearly and supports her in any decision and business.

Her mathematical skills were so amazing which was showed in the part when the psychologists and scientists were baffled who ran tests on her brain to figure out how she could do complicated calculations so fast. And they couldn’t. It held mystique then, and it holds mystique even now. “HOW!!??”

Korean dramas currently are at the apex of their industry. Encroaching upon new grounds, these captivating series have made its way to the U.S., mostly through Netflix. I personally love numerous Korean dramas on Netflix as well; from the recent “Crash Landing on You” to “Love Alarm” back in 2017, I’ve watched a handful of dramas to call myself a fan. Recently, I’ve been watching one that took a quite different approach to its story plot: “Hospital Playlist.” Released in March 2020, “Hospital Playlist” made its way to being one of the most-watched Korean dramas in South Korea. Just in the first episode, we are introduced to five friends who knew each other since the start of medical school. As a Korean medical school consists of 6-years, including college and medical school, they practically have known each other for almost 20-years. Kim Joon-Wan (played by Jung Kyoung-Ho), a cardiothoracic surgeon, is caring to the patients and his friends while insensitive to the residents. Ch
